The sedimentary character of the Cambrian Hellefjord Schist Group is described and it is concluded that this sequence is composed of alternating pelagic sediments and distal turbidites; a local slide-conglomerate is also represented. There follows a discussion of the probable sedimentation conditions and associated tectono-environmental implications. The turbidite sequence is here looked upon as the last stage in a pre-orogenie geosynclin al depositional cycle. Finally, some Eocambrian-Cambrian successions in other parts of Finnmark are reviewed briefly in the light of the results of the present study.
