Distribution patterns of rare earth elements in minerals

Replotting of a large number of the rare earth element analyses of minerals available in the literature has shown that rare earth element fractionation in minerals follows relatively simple trends. In particular, the take-up of rare earths in many rock-forming minerals is strongly selective and follows a pattem which is predictable in terms of the ionic radii of the major elements involved. The rocks of a number of differentiation series show common REE fractionation trends which can be explained in terms of crystal fractionation of the rock-forming minerals.
