Analyses of the natural gamma activity of sediments and sedimentary rocks can give valuable sedimentological information about variations in the chemical and physical properties of the depositional basin, changes in provenance as well as the diagenetic evolution. In the present paper, three different applications are illustrated by using examples from the Baltic Shield, Svalbard, Scotland and Western Tanzania. The applications of the natural gamma log activity include diagnosing distinct depositional conditions, correlating onshore and offshore stratigraphic sections and mapping diagenetically induced variations in lithology.
