At one locality the Lower Palaeozoic Solund-Stavfjord Ophiolite Complex is overlain by oceanic metalliferous sediment. Analysis of the composition of this sediment reveals juxtaposition of an active spreading axis and a continental landmass. In contras! to modem mid-ocean ridge sediments a ferromanganese oxide phase was absent, implying that chemical balances of Mn-nodule related chemical species were very different.
