Late Weichselian ice flow evolution in south-central Norway

The exact configuration of the last deglaciation in central parts of Norway has long been debated, partly because dramatic relief in the area caused localized ice flow patterns, which are difficult to correlate with each other. In an attempt to resolve these issues we have employed regional mapping by using satellite images, combined with new as well as previously collected field data. The dataset at hand reveals major ice flow patterns, probably correlated with the onset of the last deglaciation. They emanate from the Jotunheimen mountain areas, trend in a northeasterly direction, and gradually turn northward. We tentatively correlate this ice flow configuration with the deglaciation before the Younger Dryas (YD). Later on, as the deglaciation continues, the general ice flow turns more towards the northwest. It has previously been suggested that this northwestward trending ice movement could be correlated with the late YD "Hoklingen Substage" (c. 10,300-10,400 14C years BP). The present reconstruction, by and large supports this correlation.
